David Adjaye’s Financial District Skyscraper will be a Concrete Pillar

Say hello to the next big skyscraper to hit the Financial District: British architect David Adjaye, the principal of Adjaye Associates, was revealed over the summer to be the design architect behind a new condo, developed by Lightstone, that’s rising at 130 William Street. And now, a batch of official renderings for the project has been unveiled, offering a glimpse at what the nearly 800-foot building might look like.

And it won’t be a skinny, glass-covered tower, either: Per a release, Adjaye was inspired by the site’s location, on what is allegedly one of the oldest streets in Manhattan. “Understanding that rich history, I was inspired to craft a building that turns away from the commercial feel of glass and that instead celebrates New York’s heritage of masonry architecture with a distinctive presence in Manhattan’s skyline,” Adjaye said in a statement.

With that in mind, the building’s exterior will be made of concrete, with large arched windows, bronze detailing, and double-height loggias on the building’s upper floors (these, naturally, will be the pricier penthouse apartments). Adjaye will also design a new public plaza for the project, adding a bit of landscaping to an otherwise slightly dismal block.

The building will have a whopping 244 condos, and while pricing has yet to be revealed, they’ll almost certainly be pretty pricey. The amenities make that pretty clear; communal offerings will include a private IMAX movie theater; a schmancy fitness center with exercise equipment, yoga room, and a spa; a pet spa; and “a private rooftop observatory deck located at the top of the building.” Sales are expected to launch early next year (Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group is handling those), with move-ins anticipated for 2020.

Adjaye Associates is the design architect for the project, and is also behind its interiors; Hill West Architects will also work on the building. Construction on the 66-story tower is still in its earliest phases.
